Pastor’s Page

Welcome to the Pastor’s Page. Articles and sermons from the pastor are posted here for you to download. It is our hope that you find this page beneficial for your spiritual growth but not a substitution for regular church participation with the body of believers in your local area. Our prayer is that this resource would be one that encourages your walk with fellow believers but not as a replacement of being an active member with your local church.

Digital sermon recordings are available. You may request these by e-mailing or calling (503) 398-5508 or simply click use the player below.

If you would like to speak with Pastor Josh, please feel free to call or e-mail him for appointments. Everyone is welcome to stop by the church office, but due to the pastor’s schedule, the surest way to speak with him is to make an appointment. Please don’t hesitate if you would like to visit with him.

Do not merely listen to the word and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. James 1:22
From the Pastor:Three convictions guide my preaching. First, I believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God. As such, the Bible is without error in itself and is the only authority and foundation for all Christian doctrine and teaching.
Secondly, I believe that the Bible is relevant to the lives of modern Christians in practical ways.
Finally, it is not enough to listen to a good sermon, or to know a passage inside and out. Scripture demands response. As you listen to these sermons, or read the Bible, consider how you feel, what you should believe and how you should behave as a result of the Word. Be doers of the word and not hearers only.”

Caution Required
Individuals and congregations are not all tempted in the same way but are inclined toward one or another sin based on personal history and personality.  As we come to 1 Corinthians 8 we find an important caution for truth loving churches.

Theology is the very practical work of understanding God's revelation of himself and it quickly impacts how we live.  In 1 Corinthians 7 we find a big theological idea tied to two very practical instructions regarding how we live our lives.

Having considered marriage we now turn to singleness in 1 Corinthians 7.  Before we can look at singleness, however, we have to consider two rival visions of reality.

    Christian Marriages
To many people today, divorce is a quaint thing to be concerned about given the great battles over marriage.  However, as we look at 1 Corinthians 7 we find that God has very specific instructions for his people regarding divorce.

    Matter Matters
Within Christianity we emphasize a spiritual relationship with the Lord.  When we are not careful, this leads to a thoughtlessness concerning our bodies which leaves us open to prevailing cultural attitudes regarding physical bodies.  The Corinthians made a similar error of downplaying the importance of the body to the Lord.  In 1 Corinthians 6 we find four correctives to this attitude.

In 1 Corinthians 6 we find truths that are very uncomfortable in today's culture but which also contain the incredible truth that God saves and transforms individuals.

When any two individuals who are sinners are put into a relationship and time is added, conflict is inevitable.  Though this is the case, it is not inevitable that we dishonor Christ in our conflict.  In 1 Corinthians 6 we see three themes which help direct how we deal with conflict between Christians.

    A Clear Light
In our last look at 1 Corinthians 5 we ask the question: Can a church committed to holiness and church discipline also be effective at evangelism?  Some would say that it is better to be committed to grace and love with the idea that a church committed to discipline must be an inward looking, fortress style church.  1 Corinthians 5 points to a better way.

    Discipline Well Done
1 Corinthians 5 gives a snapshot of church discipline and presents it as a necessary action motivated by love for the Lord and his people.  Today we consider how to do church discipline properly by zooming out and looking at Matthew 18.

    Purging Evil
1 Corinthians 5 speaks of church discipline - a topic deeply offensive to many people.  Throughout the chapter Paul uses loaded language recalling the Old Testament.  When we grasp this we come to understand that we are not offended enough by this passage!  How can a passage which looks back to community executions in the Old Testament be a part of God's good plan for Christians today?

    Words or Power
A letter from the IRS can raise our blood pressure but can God's word?  Is Jesus a reality or a fiction in your lived experience?  Today we are challenged to remember that the Kingdom of God is a reality and not a matter merely of talk.

When it comes to pride, the culture of our society and the culture of God's kingdom come into sharp conflict.  With the help of 1 Corinthians 4 we consider how to pursue humility and fight pride.
