Pastor’s Page

Welcome to the Pastor’s Page. Articles and sermons from the pastor are posted here for you to download. It is our hope that you find this page beneficial for your spiritual growth but not a substitution for regular church participation with the body of believers in your local area. Our prayer is that this resource would be one that encourages your walk with fellow believers but not as a replacement of being an active member with your local church.

Digital sermon recordings are available. You may request these by e-mailing beaverchurch@gmail.com or calling (503) 398-5508 or simply click use the player below.

Sermons

Do not merely listen to the word and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. James 1:22

From the Pastor:Three convictions guide my preaching. First, I believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God. As such, the Bible is without error in itself and is the only authority and foundation for all Christian doctrine and teaching.

Secondly, I believe that the Bible is relevant to the lives of modern Christians in practical ways.

Finally, it is not enough to listen to a good sermon, or to know a passage inside and out. Scripture demands response. As you listen to these sermons, or read the Bible, consider how you feel, what you should believe and how you should behave as a result of the Word. Be doers of the word and not hearers only.”

A Clear Light
In our last look at 1 Corinthians 5 we ask the question: Can a church committed to holiness and church discipline also be effective at evangelism?  Some would say that it is better to be committed to grace and love with the idea that a church committed to discipline must be an inward looking, fortress style church.  1 Corinthians 5 points to a better way.

    Discipline Well Done
1 Corinthians 5 gives a snapshot of church discipline and presents it as a necessary action motivated by love for the Lord and his people.  Today we consider how to do church discipline properly by zooming out and looking at Matthew 18.

    Purging Evil
1 Corinthians 5 speaks of church discipline - a topic deeply offensive to many people.  Throughout the chapter Paul uses loaded language recalling the Old Testament.  When we grasp this we come to understand that we are not offended enough by this passage!  How can a passage which looks back to community executions in the Old Testament be a part of God's good plan for Christians today?

    Words or Power
A letter from the IRS can raise our blood pressure but can God's word?  Is Jesus a reality or a fiction in your lived experience?  Today we are challenged to remember that the Kingdom of God is a reality and not a matter merely of talk.

    Humility
When it comes to pride, the culture of our society and the culture of God's kingdom come into sharp conflict.  With the help of 1 Corinthians 4 we consider how to pursue humility and fight pride.

    Seeking Significance
We all want to know that our lives have meaning and significance.  In a small statement in 1 Corinthians 4, Paul points to the well-lived, significant life.

    Measuring Maturity
Measuring with the wrong unites makes a mess of life and the same is true of our spiritual lives.  In 1 Corinthians 3 we find people proud of how far they have come who are informed that they are infants in Christ!  We are challenged to measure spiritual maturity correctly.

    On Being Respectable
One of our great temptations is to compromise what should not be compromised in order to gain the approval and applause of the world.  We are tempted to be respectable in the eyes of the world as Christians.  In 1 Corinthians 2 we find Paul addressing this temptation and pointing us to a better way.

    Stealing Glory
The very first exhortation in the book of 1 Corinthians is that the church be one.  This comes before exhortations regarding idolatry, sexual immorality, the Lord's Supper, and other seemingly bigger issues.  Why is this?  We consider today how prideful division distorts the church's witness to the Gospel.
